Many years passed before the two friends met again. They both had their own family and the time gone by seemed immeasurable. Yet, when they met, it was as though not a day had gone by since the moment they had parted as children on the mountaintops of Crete.

One day, while patrolling the Aghia Varvara area, Stephanos saw Petros, lost in thought, walking down the street. He stopped and got out of the police car to greet him. From that day on they became close again and saw each other almost every day. They were both on the rise of their careers, the difference being that Stephanos, who was older than Petros, had spent more years in service at the police station.

So at this particular time, finding himself in dire straits, the only person he thought of turning to for help was his good friend District Attorney Petros Argyrakis. He called him up late one night and said they had to talk. Petros responded at once to his friend’s summons.

They met in Flisvos, at the square with the cafes, by the fountain where children gathered to play in the afternoon. The streets were damp from a light rain that had fallen a few hours earlier. The coastal avenue was deserted. Only two cars, racing each other, whizzed by at full speed. Otherwise everything seemed quiet and calm as usual. Stephanos explained that he was determined to proceed even without his friend’s help. He referred to his many years of service in order to stress the seriousness of the situation.

Without beating around the bush, Petros asked, “How many men do you need?”

“I have five men at my disposal. I would actually need another ten at least. Better still, if they were trained, but I know that I am already asking too much.”

“I can spare up to five men. That’s all. Are you sure you want to proceed?”

Stephanos Asimakis, Head Commissioner of the Paleo Faliro police station, drily answered, “Yes.”

Petros then went to one of the payphones situated on the sidewalk of Agiou Alexandrou Avenue—the exit connecting the coastal avenue with the center of Paleo Faliro.
